What is a baffle box?
A baffle box is a plasterboard enclosure formed within a partition wall or ceiling to maintain fire compartmentation, preserve acoustic separation, or to neatly dress around services where they penetrate the wall. Built up from plasterboard with acoustic insulation and/or fire-rated board, it keeps the wall’s rating intact where services pass through.
Why are they used?
Service penetrations are one of the most common weak points in a rated wall. A baffle box maintains the required fire rating — typically 30, 60, 90 or 120 minutes — or the acoustic performance around those penetrations. They’re especially common in hotels, apartments, hospitals and schools, where both fire and sound performance are critical and often need to be achieved together.
Why prefabricate them off-site?
Forming baffle boxes by hand on site is fiddly, time-consuming and easy to get inconsistent. Off-site baffle boxes arrive consistent, pre-labelled and ready to install — saving time on site, cutting waste and dust, and keeping quality uniform across the whole job. It shifts the repetitive, labour-intensive work into a controlled workshop environment.
